Be Transformed Through Discipleship
by: Sisterhood XYE
Jesus said we are all called to make disciples … but what does discipleship or mentorship look like today?
A few years ago, I sought out Betty to be my mentor. I knew she was a powerful leader in multiple arenas and I wanted to grow my skills and stamina. I had no concept of the transformative process God would guide me through as Betty took a coach approach to our mentoring relationship. I intended to grow my leadership capacity by spending time with Betty, when in fact, what I needed most was to understand what it means to live as a beloved daughter of God.
At our first meeting Betty asked me, “What does it feel like to be loved by God?” I remember thinking, “What does it feel like? What a ridiculous question…” However, I stopped to reconsider my Sunday school response as she held space for me to think for several seconds, and eventually I said, “I don’t know.”
I typically have no shortage for words, but that day, Betty’s question stumped me. Over the next year, Betty and I both grew more comfortable, curiously approaching unclear topics and seeking answers, understanding, and solutions together. During our conversations, Betty rarely told me what to think, but her questions helped me to think for myself. This is how I was transformed through discipleship.
Discipleship grows both people through the process. Betty tells of our mentorship experience like this…
“As I got to know Kait, I recognized the unique gifts, talents and passion that God had placed in her. I was so excited to see her achieve and fulfill her dreams! Her mentoring goal was to learn how to grow in her leadership, however, I discerned God wanting something more profound for Kait, which was to experience His deep love for her in the core of her being. I shared how I had learnt to embrace this reality by seeking and experiencing God’s presence through the good and especially the painful experiences of my life. With this unshakable foundation of His abiding and enduring love, I have seen Kait unleash one faith adventure after another with her gifts, talents and passion! I marvel at our Heavenly Father who orchestrates the events of our lives for His glory and for our good.”
Today, Betty and I are working together to facilitate the Sisterhood Rooted Mentorship Program that is a powerful vehicle for girls and women across Canada to experience the same benefits of discipleship we have experienced. We are currently receiving applications for a brand new 8-month program that will begin October 2021. You can learn more about the Rooted Mentorship Program by visiting www.sisterhoodyxe.com. However you choose to disciple others this fall, and be discipled yourself, may you enjoy the gift of authentic, loving relationships as you continue forward in your faith journey.
