TRUE Care

By: Jacquline Morrison

Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Luke 10:36,37

God cares for you!

So often the journey of life involves dealing with some form of crisis or another.  If you have had a crisis, or when you find yourself in a crisis,

God will divinely intervene by placing people on your path who will demonstrate care, because He is a God who cares.

Just the other day I was reading the bible and reconnected to a story I had first read when I was a child, but I see it so differently now at a time when our world is in crisis.  The story is about a person who was beaten by robbers and left by the roadside- He was in crisis.  I love that we do not know what caused the man to fall victim to crisis, beaten and left alone, but we clearly know he needed care. Several people saw him and passed him by, but then there came the one who really cared.

There was one who showed compassion and came to his side and offered him help.  The man who cared was motivated by the need he saw.  He did not ask the beaten man “do you need a band-aid”?, he saw that he had a need and supplied it.  He did not ask “do you need a place to stay”, he saw that he was on the street and took him to an inn.  The man cared in such a way that he did not wait for the one in need to ask, he was moved by compassion.

On the journey of life there will be times when we need care and there will be times when we need to be the one who extends cares.

A person who cares will first stop; when everyone else and everything else in life just moves on despite the crisis. Someone who cares will make it their priority to stop, to pause, to look around, to consider what can I do, and ask how can I make a difference in this moment. Today I paused to consider which one of my neighbours needed care.

Secondly, the man who stopped in the scripture expressed care by giving of his resources, his time, and his service. It is in the time of crisis that those who care will divinely cross paths with the one, the neighbour, the woman, who by divine appointment will be in need of care. So the big question I pondered this week is “Who is my neighbour?”.  Who is in crisis that God is setting up for a divine care appointment.

Who might God be showing you that needs care in this moment?  Pausing, seeing people, giving of time, acts of service and resources are all ways to show care.   The good man mentioned in Luke 10, gave of his time, his resources, and arranged for service to be granted to his neighbour.

Who is your neighbour?

I pray that God will send you the care you need in this season. Everyone will meet someone to whom they can show care in this time of crisis: a phone call, a listening ear, hopeful conversation, preparing a meal, food, paying a bill,  If each one shows care to someone, then that someone may as a result show care to someone else, I can only imagine what a beautiful “circle of care” would be created.
