TRUE Focus- The One Essential Thing

by Kaitlyn Cey

Do you ever feel like it is difficult to step forward into your purpose because there is too much to focus on?

Women are often deemed masters of multi-tasking and are known to have the remarkable ability to juggle competing tasks, priorities, and demands, all while maintaining a cool composure. We also live with unlimited information at our fingertips, giving the illusion that our best answers can be found by pressing a button. Although the right information can be helpful, the constant flow of tips, tricks, and data can send us in many directions and make it tough to focus.

Whether you are an entrepreneur, ministry woman, momma, businesswoman, blogger, creative, change-maker, or professional – we all desire the resources and cues necessary to progress in our God-given purpose. We want to be focused on the right things and information, to take that next right step.

We want to be focused on the right things and information, in order to take that next right step.

In 2014, Greg McKeown released his bestselling book called, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. In his book, McKeown writes, “Essentialism is not about how to get more things done; it’s about how to get the right things done. It doesn’t mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential.” McKeown’s book exploded in popularity because so many people resonate with his message that a focused life is a better life.

This sounds simple enough, but getting clarity can be a tall order when it comes to the question, what is truly essential?

What if there was a person who knew you better than you know yourself, and could simplify your life for you?

What if He was determined to help you take your best next step and teach you how to focus your heart, energy, and resources so you can make your greatest contribution?

There is.

He is a real person.

The Holy Spirit.

He asks us to stay focused on one essential thing,

Himself.

The Holy Spirit is the most incredible, kind, and loving person imaginable and He wants to be both the source of our power and the guiding light for our daily actions and decisions. Recognizing and following His voice can move us beyond positive thinking into Spirit-empowered living.

While sound thinking can enhance our lives in many ways, it is how we direct our love that truly steers our days, our decisions and will dictate whether we walk in our purpose. We are driven by our desires.

We are driven by our desires.

One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to fill us with His love. He convinces us that we are forgiven, free, accepted daughters of the King. Romans 8:16 says, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children (NLT).”

Not only does the Holy Spirit affirm our position as His beloved, but He also provides daily guidance. Before Jesus left his disciples to go and be with the Father in Heaven, He said to them, “But the Advocate … will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Jesus’ words are true for us too. The Holy Spirit will teach us all things. While it is true that information overload can overwhelm and send us into a multi-focused frenzy, Jesus says we can trust the All-Sufficient One to direct us in all things.

He knows where you and I uniquely need to focus to fulfill the destiny designed for us. When we stay focused on this one essential thing, we truly have everything.
